I love to read and I read a lot, whenever I can. I usually have a book in my backpack, purse, or bag just in case I have to wait somewhere or I get a few moments to myself. I particularly like fiction of various kinds, but you probably will see me with a fantasy or sci-fi book. I admit I don't read as much non-fiction.
I have known a few writers who admitted that they never read. The concept of an author -- whether published or trying to get published -- who doesn't read or doesn't even
like to read is confusing to me. Reading helps you write -- it's as simple as that. It makes you think, it opens your horizons, it gives you quotes and ideas, it strengthens your own style; writing is not so isolated that you can't pick up a book.
In fact, reading helped me learn
how to write. I come from a family where English was the second language and as a result my parents didn't always know the rules of English grammar or usage. When I was stuck, I would crack open a book and see how that author did it. Did quotation marks go before or after punctuation? Did I have to indent for dialogue? Reading helped me actually learn to write and, as a result, my writing has usually been ahead of my age level.
But enough about that, on to the book list! :) I have the top 10 books currently on my reading list. I don't read these books in order. Whatever I get my hands on first is what I read first. Check back often; this page will update about once a month. Also, Every month, I write a blog entry about
the books I've read that month and write a short review. Check them out and if you've read the book, too, leave a comment about what
you thought of it!
